2. In the footsteps of history – the medieval town of Štramberk
Annotation
This excursion will introduce the historical sights of the region, namely the picturesque town in the centre of the Štramberk Highlands, known as “Moravian Bethlehem”. Štramberk was founded in 1359 by the son of the Czech king, King John of Luxembourg (1296-1346), the Moravian Margrave Jan Jindřich of Luxembourg (1322-1375). The town and the surrounding area are dominated by the ruins of the Strallenberg castle including a cylindrical tower called Trúba. In addition there is a unique collection of timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, most of which form the city conservation area. The territory of the town was already populated back in prehistoric times. The discovery in the Šipka caves, where remnants of a settlement and skeletal remains of Neanderthals from 40,000 B.C. were found, testifies to this fact.
